21st Century, Telenor in pact
One of Nigeria's leading
telecommunication operators 21st Century
Technologies limited is fine-tuning its partnership deal
with Telenor, Norwegian telecom giant.
The deal was struck recently, IT Edge
learnt and details are still sketchy. Telenor is sending
down a chief technical officer (CTO), chief financial
officer (CFO) and other critical workforce to consolidate
on the new strategic partnership.
The deal opens a major drive by 21st
Century to strengthen its grip in the highly competitive
market. The network operator opened shop over five years
ago as an Internet Service Providers (ISP), creating a
niche as a provider of high bandwidth for corporate
players.
In a bandwidth hungry market
notorious for providers’ tendency to undercut customers
with insufficient bandwidth supply, 21st
Century sold Internet services successfully to become a
major player in only a short time.
It has since grown to become a voice
operator delivering service through a steadily increasing
network of fiber optic in Lagos.
From its former base in highbrow
Victoria Island, it has extended services to Ikoyi, Lagos
Island and Ikeja, capital of Lagos State with a heavy
cosmopolitan population of 15 million or about ten percent
of the country's population.
21st Century has strategic
relationship with Siemens for equipment vendor to provide
the operator with switches. A pact with Intelsat is
helping to drive video and audio streams for a market
waking up to some levels of sophistication.
CEO Wale Ajisebutu could not be
reached for comment on the new deal.
