Ghana sees bigger market for outsourcing
By Roberts Offor-Amankwah, Accra, Ghana
Outsourcing
is bound to grow in Ghana as the Association of Ghana
Industries (AGI) prepares to draw up an ICT programme to
promote outsourcing in West Africa’s second biggest
economy of 17 million people. With its political
stability, steadily improving economy, low labour wages
and a favourable global perception, Ghana, which enjoys a
A+ transparency rating, appears to be a favourite
destination for outsourcing opportunities from western
economies desiring to spread their outsourced operations
outside the now traditional Asian countries of India and
China.
But the AGI is not only seeking to promote offshore
outsourced jobs. It is working on identifying key areas
where local SMEs (Small Medium Scale Enterprises) could
benefit from the expertise of more established and larger
compnaies in Ghana. “Industrial growth is key to our
development and this can be achieved through partnership
where larger companies will be seen supporting smaller
ones by outsourcing from the SMEs,” said he said AGI
president Prince Kofi Kludjeson at the sixth INDUTECH
exhibition at the Ghana International Trade Fair. The fair
attracted over 750,000 participants including exhibitors
drawn from different sectors of the economy.
Economic transformation and improved managerial
capabilities can come from ICT which ultimately results in
higher profitability, said Kludjeson while stressing on
the need for bigger companies to seek ways of exploring
mutually beneficial business opportunities with SMEs.
While many SMEs could produce raw materials required by
large companies, not much had been done to promote the
sub-contracting, complained Kludjeson. He assured that the
AGI was working to resolve the problem and allow the
different industries in West Africa take advantage of the
sub-regions’ 250-million consumer market.
