Globacom, GAP add vehicle tracking solution
By Melvin
Awolowo
Second
national operator (SNO) Globacom Limited has unveiled a
new product with the trade name “Glo Fleetmanager”. The
product, which was made
public recently in Lagos, Nigeria is hinged on a
partnership between
Globacom and Global Asset Protection (GAP) Limited
“Glo Fleetmanager” is a vehicle tracking technology
designed to allow haulage, long distance transport
business owners and private individuals who own exotic
cars and can afford the service to keep a close tab on
their vehicles and goods.
The system offers real-time information on the exact
location of a vehicle at every point in time using the
Global Positioning System (GPS) and a specially developed
software.
There are already a number of vehicle tracking technology
solutions in Nigeria’s burgeoning market. Globacom’s Group
Director Marketing and Strategy Subhra Das is hinging the
unique feature of the company’s new solution on its
ability to generate information at any time on such
parameters like vehicle speed, vehicle idling, location,
routes, harsh
braking, and can alert control room using the remote panic
button installed in the driver’s cockpit in the case of an
emergency situation.
Chief Executive Officer of GAP Collins Orakwe who was at
the launch explained how the tracking solution works using
a pictorial demonstration of the system.
Fleetmanager is a postpaid SIM based tracking solution
that will facilitate easy monitoring of vehicular
stoppages, report vehicle utilisation, keep a trip log and
when the vehicle is out of the Glo’s coverage area store,
information in a data bank for the control room to access.
According to Orakwe, the service also offers additional
security for both vehicle and driver and features a
control room emergency demobilizer which automatically
disengages the vehicle right from GAP’s 24 hour
station or client’s privately installed control room in
trouble situations like robbery.
He explained that the driver could activate a panic button
and send a distress call to the control station to respond
to such emergencies adequately thus safeguarding onboard
passengers or goods and in some cases both.
Another salient feature the solution offers is the
“accident buffer.” This is a makeshift equivalent of the
black box found on airplanes, which can provide detailed
information five minutes before and a second by second
reconstruction of the accident to assist authorities
concerned investigate such accidents and to enable them
take precautions against such in the future.
