ICANN
sets agenda for 2005
With
rampaging poverty, low level of literacy and largely
underdeveloped IT infrastructures, Africa's
underprivileged Internet status took the front burner
at the yearly meeting of the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) taking place at
Cape Town, South Africa.
The five day event started yesterday December 1 with a
press conference late in the evening and would end 5th
December. The meeting continues today with agenda that
will include the introduction of ICANN's three
year-strategic plan, and will also feature updates on
current Africa-related Internet issues, including the
status of AfriNIC, the Regional Internet number Registry
for Africa. The press conference held with Dr. Vint Cerf,
ICANN Chairman & Dr. Paul Twomey, ICANN CEO & President
The meeting is ICANN's 4th in the region - the first
held in Egypt in 2000, then Ghana in 2002, Tunisia in
2003, and now South Africa. It aims to share with the
participants its experiences and for the participants from
the region to share with ICANN their expertise and
knowledge. [IT Edge will give daily online update of
proceedings]
Some of the key topics the meeting will address
include
* New generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) strategy.
* Implementation of the recent Inter-Registrar
Transfers policy.
* Finalising the request for proposals on the .net
re-bid.
* An overview of AfriNIC's plans for transitioning
management of
Internet number resources to local control and
roll-out of IPV6.
* Promoting understanding of Internationalised Domain
Names (IDNs).
* Advancing the interests of individual Internet user
communities
(At-Large).
* Discussions on how the ongoing United Nations'
Internet governance
process could affect Africa's Internet users.

consensus-development
process. The meetings are free to attend, and open to
