NCC to adopt anti-mobile phone theft system
By OFFIONG
ENE
Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),
Ernest Ndukwe disclosed over the weekend that an anti-
theft device that would render any stolen mobile phone in
the country useless would be introduced before the year
runs out.
The device, when in operation shall completely bar stolen
phones from being used in any of the phone networks in the
country.
Worried about the growing rate of phone theft in the
country, Ndukwe at the 47th Consumer Parliament held at
Anambra in the Eastern part of Nigeria, explained that
the anti-theft system was developed with collaboration of
the mobile phone operators and that a company has been
licensed to manage the system.
According to him, “the system will require that both CDMA
and GSM networks link their data to the system such that
once a theft is reported; it will render the handset
useless”.
If all goes well, mobile phone theft may just be a thing
of the past in the country come December this year.
