Niger
privatises in 2005
Niger’s monopoly telco Sonitel
has only 13 months to the end of its solo reign.
Authorities have announced in Niamey, capital of Nigeria’s
northwestern neighbour, that Sonitel’s monopoly will end
by December 2005.
Meanwhile mobile operator
Celtel has announced that it has hit the 80,000-subscriber
mark and now covers 80% of Niger’s population of less than
seven million. Meanwhile in Liberia, workers of the
Liberia Telecommunication Corporation are to be paid
out-standing salaries. A planned strike about two months
ago was after an appeal by the corporation's new henchman,
Amara Kromah. The workers asking for the payment of four
months salary arrears and better working condition.
