Starcomms rolls out mobile data card
By Melvin

Nigeria’s
private telecom operator (PTO) Starcomms has rolled out
its
instant Internet access via wireless mobile data card at
an official launch held in Lagos at the just ended NICOMM
2004, an annual event organised by the Association of
Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria
(ATCON).
Wireless Internet access is catching on globally with the
spread of wi-fi. Most notebooks now come with the wireless
card compartment. In Nigeria, hotspots are increasingly
gaining grounds.
The wireless or mobile data card being offered by
Starcomms will operate at an average download speed (DS)
of 80kbps but has capacity to reach a maximum DS of
140kbps.
Starcomms’ CEO Dirk Smet says the new service is easy to
use, fast, and convenient, and requires no special
activation charge.
“Only a one-off acquisition cost is required, and
subsequently the subscriber pays a fixed access charge
which permits 24hour access to the internet from any
location within our network coverage areas of Kano,
Maiduguri and of course Lagos” said Smet.
